There are indications that High Chief Government Ekpemukpolo, also known as Tompolo, may soon have a soft landing from the federal government as competent sources within his Gbaramatu Kingdom have revealed that there are plans by the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government to unfreeze his account.
In a phone discussion with one of Tompolo’s kinsmen in Gbaramatu Kingdom, our correspondent learnt that the plan to unfreeze his account is true, although no specific date or time was given for the unfreezing of the account.
The kinsman said: “It is true that plans are on ground to unfreeze his account. Yes, it is true. But on the issue of army saying whether Tompolo is dead or not, that is absolutely untrue, Tompolo is very much alive. It is only God that can kill him, nobody. You can see that the guy seems to be taller than Buhari”.
Besides his kinsman who confided in our correspondent on phone that the plan to unfreeze his account is seriously on ground, a former Niger Delta warlord also revealed that the plan was in the offing but is yet to come to fruition.
In an interview with Israel Akpodoro, a former Niger Delta warlord, he said: “That is what we are hearing that the government has discussed with Tompolo and Tompolo has given them the condition that they should drop all the charges against him, then they should unfreeze his account.
“That’s what we heard. So, that’s why am saying that if it is really true that the government is doing this negotiation with Tompolo, if they drop charges against Tompolo, then they are setting another problem for the people that worked for the government.
“That problem may not be solved before this government gets finished. That is why I’m saying that if they are dropping charges against Tompolo, if it is true because for now, it is rumour, but if it is true, that means the corruption Buhari is fighting is in vain. The fight will collapse”.
He said if the government drops charges against him, then Buhari has failed and failed woefully, noting that if the charges are dropped, then Tompolo has automatically become the president of this country because he has gone above the law.
“Dasuki is facing the same charges, he is a military man. He didn’t go against his charges. Who is Tompolo that is going against the federal government and the federal government is panicking, planning to drop charges against Tompolo? If the federal government does it, it must do it for others”, Akpodoro stated.
Tompolo, the repentant militant commander prior to the amnesty programme of the federal government, has been on the black book of the federal government but it appears the government is finding it difficult to arrest Tompolo who has been on the run for almost a year now.
Arrest warrants have been issued but the military personnel have not been able to fish out Tompolo for prosecution, even as the case instituted against him seems to have failed as there seems to no evidence of the case against the former militant commander.
Only last week, the army told journalists that they cannot tell whether Tompolo was dead or still alive, fueling speculations that the army personnel are fed up with their search for Tompolo and consequently abandoning the search for him.
